Objectives: Comparison of vitamin D receptor (VDR) expression between thyroid tissue of patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) and thyroid tissue of healthy individuals. Materials and Methods: Nineteen thyroid tissue samples were collected for the study: 13 samples with HT from the CROHT biobank and 6 samples from healthy participants from the “10001 Dalmatians” biobank. The samples were immunohistochemically stained with an VDR antibody, images were taken using a fluorescent microscope, and processed with ImageJ software. For the assessment of statistical significance, we used a parametric t-test to compare the mean percentage of area marked by VDR antibody immunofluorescence between the two study groups. Results: We did not find a statistically significant difference in VDR expression between patients with HT and control subjects (P=0.165). A higher percentage of expression was detected in HT patients (0.262 ± 0.168) compared to control subjects (0.154 ± 0.095). Conclusions: Our research investigating VDR expression is potentially important as it helps us understand the impact of vitamin D on thyroid tissue. Our results did not establish a statistically significant difference in VDR expression between subjects with HT and control subjects, functionally confirming the result of a previous observational study from the same biobank to which our subjects belong, which found no difference in vitamin D levels between these two groups.
