Abstract

Parallel abstract (English)
Objective: The aim of this study was to show whether there is a correlation between unintentional injury in early adolescence and depression. Materials and methods: The study was conducted on 803 children from the sixth grade primary schools in the area of Split. Reasons for testing was explained to children and the manner of its implementation. Children was filling out the test papers, which contained written instruction. Tests measures were: - The number of unintentional injuries in the last year; - Depression with sub-scales of depression; - Suicide. Results: Data analysis showed that adolescents of both sexes equally thinking about suicide and have an equal number of unintentional injuries per year. Adolescents who have a higher number of unintentional injuries during the year achieved higher scores on tests of depression and suicidality with the exception of the statement "I tried to kill myself." Conclusion: The results show a correlation unintentional injuries and depression, but the mechanisms that cause it are not known. It would be good to put under increased surveillance all those adolescents with a number of injuries during the year and look at their signs of depression.
