Abstract Ciljevi: istražiti koliko dentalnih tehničara u Splitsko-dalmatinskoj županiji koristi CAD/CAM tehnologiju pri izradi fiksnoprotetskih radova i kakvi su stavovi tehničara i educiranost o njenom korištenju.
Abstract (english) Objectives: to investigate how many dental technicians in Split-Dalmatia County use CAD/CAM technology for manufacturing fixed dental prostheses and evaluate the attitude and level of education of the aforementioned.
Materials and methods: This cross-sectional research was based on a questionnaire intended for dental technicians working in dental laboratories and high schools educating dental technicians in Split-Dalmatia County of Republic of Croatia and took place from 7th January until 16th March, 2020. The questionnaire was answered anonymously and single-handedly. The data was statistically analyzed using computer software IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows version 25.0 with significance level (α) set to 0,05.
Results: CAD/CAM technology for manufacturing fixed dental prosthesis is used or was used by two-thirds of 54 questioned dental technicians. Most technicians (55,56%) who do not use and have not used CAD/CAM technology are planning soon to start using it. Two-thirds of dental technicians who use or were using CAD/CAM technology are planning soon to upgrade or replace CAD/CAM machines. Most dental technicians (61,11%) started to use CAD/CAM technology after 2015. Most dental technicians (77,78%) use both components of CAD/CAM technology. The level of education for using CAD/CAM technology is low. Technicians regard impressions made by intraoral scanner better than elastomeric impressions. Fixed dental prostheses made using CAD/CAM technology are considered to be of higher quality than conventionally made fixed dental prostheses, yet similar regarding esthetics and longevity. The expense of buying CAD/CAM machines is the most frequently remarked flaw (75,93%) and most dental technicians consider CAD/CAM manufacturing significantly faster than conventional techniques (94,44%). Dental technicians with less work experience are more educated (p<0,001) about and more frequent users (p=0,036) of CAD/CAM technology than technicians with more work experience. Technicians working in the private sector are more frequent users of CAD/CAM technology than technicians working in public or public and private sectors simultaneously (p<0,001). Technicians using or who used CAD/CAM technology have more additional education about it (p=0,001) but do not regard that it produces fixed dental prosthesis of higher quality, better esthetics or longer longevity.
Conclusions: CAD/CAM technology for manufacturing fixed dental prostheses is used or was used by two-thirds of dental technicians in Split-Dalmatia County with a significant increase in usage from 2015. Technicians have an optimistic attitude towards the quality, esthetics and longevity of fixed dental prostheses made by CAD/CAM technology and the quality of impressions made by intraoral scanner. The level of education for using CAD/CAM technology is low.
