Organ transplantation is one of the most significant achievements of modern medicine. But it depend entirely on the willingness of donors and their families. The gap between the number of organs available and the demand increases every year in Croatia as well as in the world The aim of this study was to determine attitudes and knowlege of medical students from University of Split School of Medicine regarding issues esential for organ donation. The study was conducted in 2013 with the permission of the Ethics Committee of the University Hospital Centre (UHC) Split and the University of Split School of Medicine. The questionnaire was anonymous and was distributed to medical students. A total of 544 students filled out the questionnaire. The response rate was 85.33 %. The sample included 366 females and 178 males. The data collected was processed using the methods of descriptive statistics analysis. The majority of respondents (89.34 %) supported organ donation. There was no differences in opinion between females and males. Some of the issues regarding organ donation is its allowance in religion. From this point of view majority of the medical students were of the opinion that their religion and worldview allows organ donation. Most of them demonstrated willingness to donate thier organ and organs of their relativies (62.13 %). Despite having positive attitudes, only a minority of medical students had signed the organ donation card (5.88 %). There was correlation between knowledge score and age. Younger students expressed doubts on validity of the criteria used to diagnose brain death and poor understanding of brain death concept. More clinical exposure in the senior years may explain differences in attitudes. These findings support the need to expand the education of organ donation. Our medical curriculum should include courses on organ transplantation to better equip future doctors with knowlege and confidence in counselling on organ donation issues. An appropriate education and a positive attitude of medical students towards organ donation may have a positive influence on the attitudes in general.
