Objectives: The main objective was to determine incidence and clinical characteristics of children diagnosed with eosinophilic esophagitis treated in Department of pediatric gatroenterology of „Sestre milosrdnice“ University Hospital of Zagreb. Patients and methods: This retrospective study has evaluated information on 25 patients aged 7-17 who were diagnosed with eosinophilic esophagitis and hospitalized in the Departmennt of pediatric gatroenterology of „Sestre milosrdnice“ University hospital of Zagreb during the period from January 1st 2013 to March 1st 2022. Results: 25 children were included in this study. Out of a total number of patients 19 (76%) were male and 6 (24%) were female. The patients' median age was 13,4 ± 3 years (min-max 7-17). Z- score was used to classify nutritional status of patients. According to Z-score 80% of patients were classified as usual (Z-score from -2 to 2). The most common clinical manifestations of EoE were abdominal pain (48%) followed by vomiting (28%), dysphagia (24%), odynophagia (20%) and food bolus impaction (16%). Some form of atopy was diagnosed in 52% of patients and the most common form was allergic rhinitis. The diagnosis of asthma was confirmed in 20% of subjects and atopic dermatitis in 16% of them. Food allergens sensitization was found in 71% of children and aeroallergens sensitization was found in 54% of them. Out of a total number of patients 29% had eosinophilia. Elevated values of total IgE in blood serum were found in 76% of subjects. EoE was more frequently diagnosed during the winter (January, February and March) than during the summer and autumn (by 2.4 times) or spring (by 4 times). Conclusion: EoE is more common in males. Patients are often previously diagnosed with some form of atopic diathesis as well as food allergens sensitization and aeroallergens sensitization. Most patients have elevated values of total IgE in their blood serum. Clinical manifestations differ. There is seasonal variation in diagnosis of EoE.
