Zaključak: Iako je sveukupno znanje ispitanika bilo dobro, kako bismo povećali razinu znanja nezdravstvenih studenata, ne bi bilo loše dodatno educirati sve studente o važnosti održavanja oralnoga zdravlja dobrovoljnim i besplatnim kontrolnim pregledima, radionicama i predavanjima.
Abstract (english) Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine how familiar students of three different faculties of the University of Split are with periodontal diseases and to compare differences in knowledge between students from different fields of science and between students in higher and lower years of study.
Materials and methods: The study involved 158 students from the Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Philosophy and FESB; 81 respondents are in the 5th year of study, while 77 respondents are in the 2nd year of study. The research was conducted through an anonymous and voluntary online survey, which was made in the Google forms app. The questionnaire consisted of a total of 12 questions. The first 5 questions were related to the personal data of the respondents, while the rest of the questionnaire consisted of questions about the causes, symptoms and prevention of periodontal diseases as well as their relationship with systemic diseases or conditions. After collecting the specified number of samples, the obtained data were listed into Microsoft Office Exel 2013 and statistically processed in STATISTICA 11.0.
Results: Students from the Faculty of Medicine showed better knowledge of periodontal diseases than other students, but there were no statistically significant difference in responses depending on age. Statistically significant difference was found between the answers to the question "What is the main cause of periodontal diseases?" (P=0.048) and the question "What is the most effective measure in preventing periodontal diseases?" (P=0.025) between FESB students, who showed the lowest level of knowledge, and students of the Faculty of Medicine. A statistically significant difference was also found between the students of the Faculty of Philosophy, with the worst knowledge, and the students of the Faculty of Medicine, with the highest level of knowledge, in the answers to the questions "What is the most common indicator of periodontal diseases?" (P=0.040) and "Is there a connection between diabetes and periodontal diseases?" (P=0.003).
Conclusion: Although the overall knowledge of the respondents was good, in order to increase the level of knowledge of nonmedical students, it would not be bad to further educate all students about the importance of maintaining oral health through voluntary and free check-ups, workshops and lectures.
