Abstract (english) | Objective: Presentation of data on the knowledge and experience of applying modern technology and artificial intelligence in the clinical practice of doctors of dental medicine in the Republic of Croatia.
Materials and methods: Doctors of dental medicine in the Republic of Croatia who work in state and private practices were included in this cross-sectional study. The survey has been conducted in physical and virtual form.
Results: A total of 200 respondents (general dentists) participated in the research. Current knowledge and understanding of modern technology and artificial intelligence were rated by most respondents as basic (36.5%) and weak (28.0%). AI systems in clinical practice are not used by the majority of respondents (76,0%), but dental prosthetics (13.0%) and oral surgery (10.0%) stood out as branches in which they are used the most. 78.3% of respondents would participate in additional education for a better understanding and more efficient use of artificial intelligence while 71.0% considered the use of modern technology and artificial intelligence as a way to improve the quality of treatment provided to patients. It is believed by most respondents (72.0%) that out of all branches of dental medicine mentioned in the questionnaire, AI can be used in dental prosthetics, for the purpose of creating a restoration design. The main obstacles encountered by respondents when integrating modern technology and artificial intelligence in clinical practice were acquisition and maintenance costs (59.0%) as well as financial obstacles (58.0%). The availability of training and education was considered an obstacle by 49.0%, although 25.0% of respondents were neutral.
Conclusion: Despite the fact there is a visible interest in education about modern technology and artificial intelligence in order to improve the quality of patient treatment, doctors of dental medicine who participated in this research showed insufficient knowledge about the aforementioned. The financial obstacle turned out to be the main reason for non-use and less knowledge about the subject of research. |
