Abstract Cilj istraživanja:
Materijali i metode:
Abstract (english) Objective:
To determine the impact of oral health on the daily activities of orthodontic patients aged 12 to 18 years.
Materials and methods:
This study included total of 131 orthodontic patients aged between 12 and 18, treated with fixed orthodontic appliance at the Department od Orthodontics, Dental Polyclinic Split. We used the OIDP questionnaire in order to determine the oral health impact of orthodontic patients on their daily activities.
Results:
124 or 94.7% of participants reported the effect of oral health on at least one of the daily activities studied by this questionnaire. Seven participants or 5.3% did not report the effect of oral health on performing daily activities. According to the results of the research, oral health has the most impact on the following activities: teeth cleaning (87%), eating (75.6%), and laughing and showing teeth without shame (59.5%). Least participants reported the effect on maintaining an emotional state without irritability (26.7%) and on sleeping and resting (32.1%). Out of the total number of participants (131), 74 (56%) were female and 57 (44%) were male. In female subjects, most of them were at the age of 16, and in male subjects at the age of 18. In all categories, the impact of oral health on everyday activities of othodontic patients is higher in girls, except in the case of daily activities where the impact is higher in boys. There is no correlation between the diagnosis of orthdontic anomalies and summed OIDP score. Out of the total number of participants (131), 126 (96.2%) of them had IOTN 4 (treatment required), while IOTN 1 and 2 subjects were not reported among sampled participants, and, statistically, there is no correlation between the IOTN grade and the summed OIDP score.
Conclusion:
Oral health of orthodontic patients aged from 12 to 18 affects their daily activities, mostly in teeth cleaning, eating and laughing and showing teeth without shame.
Oral health if more affecting female subjects than male subjects.
The most common orthodontic anomaly in the examined sample was tooth dystopia of more than 3 mm, and the most frequent IOTN level in the examined sample was level 4 (seriously needed orthodontic therapy) and it was found that the diagnosis of orthodontic anomaly and the degree of IOTN did not affect the summed OIDP score.
