Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess knowledge, attitudes and risk perceptions of medical and dental students at the University of Split School of Medicine toward high-risk patients and to determine whether there is any difference in the knowledge, attitudes and risk perceptions among students of the mentioned studies throughout all years. Materials and Methods: A total of 595 students of medicine and dental medicine participated in the study at the University of Split School of Medicine. Respondents filled out a questionnaire that was completely anonymous, and contained questions about the knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions of the risk of high-risk patients (HBV, HCV, HIV). The data was processed in Microsoft Office Excel 2010 and coded for further statistical processing. Descriptive analysis was performed. The chi square test, with a 95% confidence interval and P ≤ 0.05, was used to determine statistically significant differences. Results: When it comes to knowledge of HIV, over 90 % of students know that unprotected sexual intercourse, blood transfusions and intravenous drug use are the main modes of transmission. Also, a high majority of students are aware that liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma are the main consequence of hepatitis B and C. Only 26.5 % of dental students and 20.2 % of medical students know that the risk of HCV infection after needlestick injury is not 50-75 %. Among medical students, 81 % would treat hepatitis patients, while the percentage in dental medicine drops to 63 %. Over 90 % of medical students and 82.5 % of dental students would not stop working with a long-time patient after suffering from HIV or hepatitis. Conclusion: In this study we have shown that there is no difference in the knowledge and attitudes towards hepatitis and HIV between the students of medicine and dental medicine. Over the years, both students have improved knowledge about hepatitis and HIV, as well as better attitudes towards high-risk patients. Although they have good knowledge of the main transmission pathways, students show poor knowledge regarding the possibility of developing infections after a stinging incident. The students of both studies show the desire for further education and training on HIV and hepatitis.
