Od niza pitanja o životnim navikama, u ovom istraživanju smo uzeli u obzir navike pušenja, prehrambene navike, konzumaciju alkohola i razinu tjelesne aktivnosti. Prehrambene navike smo ispitali pomoću ljestvice za procjenu mediteranske prehrane (engl. Mediterranean Diet Serving Score, MDSS).
Abstract (english) Objective: The aim of this study was to examine wheter there is an association between uptake of the preventive dental examination and dietary habits and physical activity in general population from the City of Split and the Island of Korčula.
Materials and methods: A cross - sectional study included 1215 subjects, residents from Split (N=230) and residents from Blato and Vela Luka settlements on the island of Korčula (N=985) during the period between September 2013 and April 2014. Data were collected using a self-administrated comprehensive questionnaire on socio-demographic traits and lifestyle habits, and a part of questionnaire on anamnestic dana, which was completed by health professionals trained to collect data. We also measured anthropometric indicators and blood pressure and we took fasting a blood sample for biochemical analysis. From a series of questions about lifestyle habits, in this study we considered smoking, eating habits, alcohol consumption and physical activity levels. We have tested eating habits using Mediterranean Diet Serving Score (MDSS). Respondents assessed the level od physical activity separately for working/active days and for free part of the day, whereby they could answer that their average physical activity was sedentary, light, moderate or severe. The chi-square test, the Mann-Whitney U test and the logistic regression were used in the data analysis. The cut-off value for statistical significance was set at P<0.05.
Results: Respondents who had a preventive dental examination in the last two years were on average younger (P<0.001), more more educated (P<0.001) and had better material status (P=0.047) compared to those who didn't have preventive dental examination, while the difference according to the gender was not recorded. Also, no difference was found in the level of physical activity (P=0.369), alcohol consumption (P=0617), or the prevalence of Mediterranean diet (P=0.609) between subjects who were examined and those who weren't examined. Going on a preventive dental examination was not associated with adherence to the Mediterranean diet pattern or with higher level of physical activity. On the other hand, going on a preventive dental examination was associated with going on a general health check-up and blood glucose control.
Conclussion: In this study, we have shown that attending a prevantive dental examination in the last two years was associated with other forms of preventive health behaviors. Further efforts are needed to promote the Mediterranean diet and to increase the level of physical activity, which are the foundations of a healthy lifestyle. Regular preventive examinations, general ones as well as the dental ones, should become the rule, not the exception, because timely diagnosis can significantly reduce the cost of the treatment and increase the succes of treatment itself. Eliminating unhealthy habits and promoting healthy lifestyle habits, especially through healthy eating and increasing physical activity, along with preventative examinations are the right way to reach the ideal of a healthy population.
