Having control over one’s health, and even more the belief of having control, has been postulated to have great importance in determining health behavior. Subjective understanding of these beliefs about health control is usually conceptualized through the construct of health locus of control (HLOC). The aim of this study was to assess whether, and to which extent, is there connection between HLOC and behaviors that affect health. For this purpose, 249 subjects from a wider area of Split were questioned using questionnaire containing modules of questions to assess values individual dimensions of HLOC and four selected behaviors: smoking, alcohol consumption, dietary habits and use of preventive health check ups. Results obtained from the questionnaire were analyzed by using statistical methods in IBM SPSS software package. By using described methods statistically significant higher levels of HLOC among older subjects and four times greater consumption of additional minerals in female subjects were observed. Positive correlation between high values of the internal HLOC and the frequency of preventive teeth check ups was found. Also, greater frequency of use of additional vitamins in people with higher values of the HLOC „powerful others“ was observed. Analyzing the relationship between smoking and alcohol consumption and HLOC no statistically significant results were found. Ultimately, the results of this study, similarly to some previous studies, suggest that HLOC is a bad predictor, or at best explains very small variance of health behavior This is reinforced by the fact that we were able to identify correlation with HLOC for only two observed behaviors.
