Objective of the Study The primary objective of this study was to determine the correlation between the average 24-hour arterial blood pressure and anxiety levels, as well as quality of life in patients with primary hypertension. Participants and Procedures The study consisted of 50 participants with primary hypertension. Each participant underwent a clinical examination and anthropometric measurements, along with a medical history intake. During experimental visit, a venous blood sample was taken from the cubital vein. Following the initial blood sample collection, participants were assessed using bioelectrical impedance scale analysis and were then equipped with devices for continuous arterial blood pressure monitoring. Finally, participants were given questionnaires focusing on the assessment of quality of life (SF-36) and anxiety levels (STAI). Results The average 24-hour systolic blood pressure was higher in the group of patients with higher state anxiety compared to the group with lower state anxiety (137.2 ± 13.1 mmHg vs. 132.4 ± 12.8 mmHg, P < 0.001) regardless of age, gender, and body mass index. Conversely, there was no difference in the average 24-hour blood pressure between the groups with higher and lower trait anxiety (134.4 ± 13.1 mmHg vs. 133.7 ± 12.9 mmHg, P = 0.624). In the studied population, no correlation was found between any dimension of quality of life and arterial blood pressure. Conclusion The importance of understanding state anxiety as a potential factor in blood pressure regulation can have clinical implications for the management of hypertension, emphasizing the need for a holistic approach that includes the assessment and management of psychological state alongside standard medical treatments.
