AIM: The aim of this study was to determine clinical and epidemiological characteristics of patients with malignant eyelid tumours in city of Split and surrounding region. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study was conducted at the Department of Ophthalmology, University hospital centre Split. It included all patients who were hospitalized under the diagnosis of malignant eyelid tumours in a period of 6 years (2007 - 2012). Data were retrospectively collected from the census of 2011, logbook (protocol), medical history files and pathohistological findings, and were processed in Microsoft Office Excel 2007. RESULTS: In a period of 6 years (2007 - 2012) we analyzed 141 patients, of which 68 men and 73 women. The average age of the population was 72,2 years, while the average annual incidence was 5,2 per 100 thousand inhabitants. Left eye was affected in 73 patients, and right in 68. Most of the patients live in coastal regions (n=78), but population in the islands is most vulnerable (9 cases per year per 100 thousand inhabitants). Pathohistological analysis of biopsy sample found the largest number of basal cell carcinomas (n=120), followed by squamous cell carcinoma (n=15), sebaceous cell carcinoma (n=3), Merkel cell carcinoma (n=2) and peripheral nerve sheath carcinoma (n=1). Basal cell carcinoma is more common in female patients (62:58), and squamous cell in males (9:6). The most common tumor location was lower eyelid (n=75) and medial canthus (n=44), while the other places were less affected. It was also found that the basal cell carcinoma is present in most of the cases on the lower eyelid (n=66) and the medial canthus (n=41), while the squamous cell carcinoma is present in the same number of cases on the upper and lower eyelid (n=6). All patients were surgically treated. CONCLUSION: Malignant eyelid tumors can occur equally in men and women at an older age. The highest incidence in the region has a population on the islands, and the most common sites are lower eyelid and medial canthus. Basal cell carcinoma is pathohistological type present in most of the cases.
