Objectives: The objective of this study was to show the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of leptospirosis in Split-Dalmatia County and thus expand the existing knowledge about this disease, which is rare in this area. Patients and Methods: In this retrospective study we present 30 patients treated for leptospirosis in the Clinical Department for Infectious Diseases of the Clinical Hospital Centre Split over a period of sixteen years, ie from 1 January 2000 to 31 December 2015. The sample needed for the implementation of our research was obtained by examining medical history and patient discharge summary. Results: Of the 30 patients, 80% were men and 20% women. Most patients (47%) were in the range of 30-50 years. Most patients were admitted in October. Most of the patients came from Split-Dalmatia County (57%), and they were mostly infected in the summer months. Hospitalization has averagely lasted 14.58 days. The most commonly reported symptoms included fever (over 80% of cases ≥39°C), myalgia (especially lower leg myalgia), jaundice, hepatomegaly and ocular conjunctiva. Liver and kidney damage is found in over 80% of patients. Additionally, anemia and thrombocytopenia were detected in 80% of patients. One patient had a complication of leptospirosis, postleptospirotic iridocyclitis. 30% of patients had Weil's disease. The most commonly used antibiotic was doxycycline in 97% of patients, and the average duration of antibiotic therapy was 10.7 days. In addition to primary therapy 5 patients (17%) were on dialysis. Three patients had to be transferred to the intensive care unit KBC Split. One case ended in the death of the patient. Conclusion: The results of clinical and epidemiological research on leptospirosis conducted in Split-Dalmatia County through a sixteen-year period are very similar to the results of clinical and epidemiological investigations carried out in other parts ofCroatia and the world.
