Objective: Determining dental age in developing children is important in pedodontics, orthodontics and forensic science. Nolla introduced a method based on the analysis of cohorts of teeth records by 25 boys and girls from Michigan, USA. The aim of this research is to examine the accuracy of Nolla´s method for dental age estimation in a sample of children from Republic of Croatia. Materials and methods: The accuracy of the Nolla´s method from 1960 was tested on a sample of 500 panoramic images of Croatian children stored at the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery of Split Clinical Hospital Center in Republic of Croatia (247 boys and 253 girls aged 6 to 13). Dental age was compared with chronological age. Results: There is a statistically significant difference between dental and chronological age in most age groups except for six-year and seven-year old boys and girl. The mean difference between dental and chronological age was -0.71±0.73 years for boys and -0.91±0.91 for girls. There was a significant underestimation of dental age in relation to chronological age for all age groups except for six-year-old boys and girls who have an over-estimated dental age. Conclusion: Nolla´s standards for the development of permanent teeth in children based on children´s teeth records from Michigan are not recommended for use in Croatian children, especially if it is known that some other dental methods are more accurate for determining the dental age.
