Objectives: The aim of this thesis is to evaluate the knowledge and attitudes of students of Dental Medicine at the University of Split School of Medicine, on bisphosphonate therapy, its complications in the oral cavity, risk factors and interventions affecting the appearance of osteonecrosis of the jaw. Materials and methods: In this paper, a transversal study of the knowledge and attitudes of third, fourth, fifth and sixth year students of Dental medicine was conducted. A questionnaire that was completely anonymous was distributed to students who attended classes through April and May 2019. Data were analyzed using Microsoft Office Excel 2016 and JASP 0.9.2.0. Descriptive sample analysis was performed, and the results are presented in percentages. The median and range or mean ± standard deviation (SD) for the continuous variables are displayed. For each outcome, the percentage of responses is calculated. The non-parametric χ 2 test was used to estimate the difference between the groups and the correlation between the variables. Results: The study was conducted on 126 students at the University of Split School of Medicine. The results of this study have shown poor knowledge of Dental medicine students on bisphosphonate therapy and its side effects in the oral cavity, which may be related to insufficient acquiring of knowledge during education. Half of the students of the sixth year believe it is able to assess when to undertake a risky treatment of a patient and when to contact a specialist. Only a few students during the course of the study encountered complications due to bisphosphonate therapy, and even fewer students would feel comfortable performing dental procedures on patients who had been on or still receiving bisphosphonate therapy. Nevertheless, almost all students showed interest in acquiring knowledge about therapy and the side effects of bisphosphonate therapy. Conclusion: An increased level of knowledge can in future lead to a decrease in BIONJ incidence, as well as improved management of BIONJ cases. Therefore, theoretical and practical initiatives should be promoted in order to improve and strengthen the knowledge of future dentists on this important issue.
