OBJECTIVE: Measurement of velocity flow and calculation of the resistance indexin ophthalmic artery using ultrasound as a diagnostic tool. To investigate the impact of the vascular component in the pseudoexfoliation glaucoma, pay attention to the role of ultrasound in predicting prognosis and progression of glaucoma. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The survey included 80 respondents divided into two groups per 40. The subjects were included in the study from the glaucoma clinicat the Department of Ophtalmology in the University Hospital of Split.The first group had 40 patients with bilateral primary open-angle glaucoma. The second group had 40 pseudoexfoliation glaucoma patients, 13 of whom had bilateral glaucoma, 16 left-eye patients, and 11 patients on the right eye (53 sick eyes in total). Ultrasound measurements were made of systolic and diastolic flow rates ophthalmic artery. Based on these ultrasound parameters, the index of resistance of the ophthalmic artery in the diseased eyes was calculated. The Mann-Whitney test was used in statistical analysis. The results are interpreted at the level of significance p <0.05. The data are shown in tabular and graphical form. RESULTS: Statistically significant difference in the ophthalmic artery resistance was found in the group with pseudoexfoliation glaucoma versus the group with primary open-angle glaucoma with a p value of 0,029. CONCLUSION:Increased resistance to ophthalmic artery suggests the influence of circulatory changes in the formation and progression of pseudoexfoliation glaucoma. Ultrasound proved to be a reliable and optimal means for evaluating glaucoma vascular status.
